We Ran Away (creative peice)

It was just like any other day at the church in Georgia, all the
nuns were all praying, but there was one nun that wasn’t thinking
about church, god, praying, or anything of that matter. Sister Gloria
had decided that she didn’t want to be a nun anymore because she
wanted to go back to her home in California and all that she had on her
mind was running away. She had never told anyone her plan to escape
because it would be to dangerous. Plus you can’t really trust anyone with
your secret.
The next morning when Sister Gloria was getting into her habit
she saw her suit case under the bed out of the corner of her eye. She
slowly kneeled down and quietly slid the old black suit case out from
under the bed. Then she felt warm air on the back of her neck. Sister
Gloria turned around and saw sister Maybell standing directly behind her
with a stingy look on her face.
“What in the world do you think you are doing? You know that you are supposed to be downstairs helping the children with their bible work” yelled sister Maybell.
If there was one thing that Sister Gloria hated was bible work because it was boring
and very hard. Sister Gloria complained about it in her diary all the time. She never understood why they made the children do it if it was so hard.
Sister Gloria replied back with a mumble of words that even she couldn’t understand.
“Say no more. I know that you want to leave, and so do I so because we are friends I will help you escape if you help me.” Said sister Maybell.
Both sisters decided to escape at night so they went to go help the kids with their bible work and kept their mouths sealed.

Dear Diary,
At around 5:15 PM Sister Maybell and I went to our rooms
and packed our stuff. We then met up in the church. The church was scary at night because it had to lights and so all you could see was candles. We left the church hoping nobody was watching us.
At about 7:46 PM. we knew that we had traveled far so after we went through about two cities tat we decided to go to bed for the night. We spotted a farmers field just up the road. We got to the field and made a bed with the extra clothing in our suit cases. We said a payer before we fell asleep thanking god for watching over us. The cold winds blew all night making it hard for us to sleep. But we were forced to because we had a long day of walking a head of us. We ran away.

Dear Diary,
Today is another big day. We have to get to Alabama by sun down because Maybell is the leader and whatever she says goes (to tell you the truth I don’t really like that rule). By the time that we reached Alabama I was so tired and both of us collapsed in the middle of the road. We had to crawl to the side were they slept for the night. Every time that a car drove by the cold mud would splash up against our faces but because we were so tired we didn’t even care. We ran away.

Dear Diary,
At around 3:15 AM the we both heard the voice of priest Michael and some other unfamiliar voices coming from across the street. The voice of priest Michael was yelling at the other men telling them that that knew we were close and he was right but the other men didn’t believe him. We then saw flash lights lashing everywhere around us and when they hit us we rolled down into the ditch behind us. We were so thankful that weren’t caught so we decided to thank god and say a prayer. Then we fell back a sleep and for all we know the men never saw us. We ran away.

Dear Diary,
The next morning we set of and walked all day. They reached Missouri (as Sister Maybell planed.) we knew they had walked too far so we snuck into a motel and slept there for the night. The motel was atrocious. There was beer, blood, food, and poop stains on the floor that had the most horrible stench that they have ever smelt. In the corner there was an old worn out air freshener that was supposed to help the smell but no longer did. The ripped up wet couch stood on one broken leg on one side of the room. On the other side of the room lye the walls from a bathroom stall on the ground and above the walls was a rusty, chipped, cold piece of stone that looked like a toilet but wouldn’t flush. The walls we stained with mold growing from the corners and old mouse holes and alcohol leaked out of the cracks in them. The bed was nothing but a mattress pad that looked no longer like a mattress pad but now like a piece of paper that was found on the street. That’s all that this small motel could hold in one room. I didn’t understand why they would make people pay to sleep in such a dump so I was thankful that we snuck in instead. We ran away.

Dear Diary,
The next morning we had to get out immediately because we didn’t want to be caught and the motel was just to torn up to stay in any more. By the end for the day we had reached Massachusetts and knew then that we were probably the fastest walkers in the world. We went to the church in Pitchfeild and slept on the hard wooden pews. The church was silent and peaceful. Even though it was a horrible place to sleep we were so grateful to sleep in a warm and protected place. Believe it or not that was the best place that I spent over night at in years. We ran away.

Dear Diary,
We woke up and sister Maybell found a twenty dollar bill under one of the pews so she took it and we found the nearest café and bought ourselves the first meal in days. Then we left and kept walking. By 9:30 PM we had reached Arkansas. That night we slept outside again. We ran away.

Dear Diary,
Today is going to be great because we are going to walk all the way to Texas. The closer I get to home the more safe I feel. Also when we finally reach home I will have rock hard thighs from all this walking. We ran away.

Dear Diary,
We got to Texas and slept at Sister Maybell’s aunt’s house for the night. We had to lie and say that we were just visiting for the night because we didn’t want her to worry. We ran away.

Dear Diary,
Maybell’s aunt offered to buy us plane tickets home so we said yes and before we knew it we were back in California. We ran home.

Ten Years Later…….
Dear Diary,
I would like to thank god for getting me home safe and I would like you to love Sister Maybell as much as you can when she is with you because I wont be seeing her until my day comes. Thank you for the great days with her and for making her so nice. I think of her every day and just wish she was with me but I guess you loved her too much and wanted her back. Maybell ran to heaven.
Love, Sister Gloria

Great details, especially in the motel scene -- gross. Repeating "We ran away" contrasted well with your final line: "Maybell ran to heaven."
I struggled with the logic in why Sister Gloria could not just leave, but once the diary entries began, I just wanted to cheer them on.
